Exterior Stone Surfacing Applications

Description

Exterior Stone Surfacing is a thermal set 2-part UV stable polyurethane resin-blended outdoor stone floor installation that uses a design mix of aggregates (typically 2mm-8mm) to create a continuous flexible stone surfacing system.

Uses

These applications are ideal for pedestrians and light vehicular use on footpaths, courtyards, driveways and balconies.

Suitable Surfaces

Exterior Stone Surfacing is designed to be overlaid on concrete and asphalt substrates or a fully permeable surface over a crushed rock base. To better learn about the best surfaces for exterior permeable paving, we recommend referring to the Overlay of Asphalt and Concrete Specification Advice Sheets or Permeable Pavement Specification Advice Sheets for more in-depth details.

Safety

For detailed safety information, please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet. Basic safety equipment for installation includes gloves, goggles, overalls, and safety footwear.

Surface Preparation

For any application, all areas you intend to treat should be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, vegetation, chewing gum, loose matter and all other contaminants that may impair the adhesion of the binder to the substrate. All new concrete substrates must be subjected to a minimum curing period of 28 days and primed with Rockseal Concrete Primer.

Mixing

A cement mixer is required to blend the bagged aggregate. The part A and B resin is then mixed in a separate mixing vessel using an electric drill and paddle. The resin mix is then added to the cement mixer and combined with the aggregate. Once mixed, it is dispensed to a wheelbarrow and taken to the work site ready for trowelling.

Storage

All exterior resin-bound paving materials and aggregates must be stored in a clean and dry environment. Refer to the storage instructions and use-by date indicated on your paving kit for details.

Application

The surfacing is hand trowel applied by trained and accredited applicators. When dispensing mixed material, an asphalt rake, lute or gauge rake may be used to ensure materials are spread evenly over the application area. The resin-bound paving materials should be compacted to an even and level consistency using a trowel. The trowel should be regularly wiped clean to avoid resin build up and to achieve best results. At this, when required, stage dust with glass for anti-slip finishes. Repeat process to completion. Do not walk on surface until completely set and tack free. Do not traffic surface with vehicles for 3 days.

Clean Up

Applications are best cleaned and maintained using mineral spirits, with their coverage depending on the size and depth of the installation.

Coverage

Depth Approx Coverage
12.5 mm 23 kg/m2
15 mm 27 kg/m2
20 mm 40 kg/m2

Technical Data

Standard Pack Size

A standard pack includes a 176 lb. kit of resin and aggregate. Other kit sizes are available to better match your coverage needs.

Cure Time

Standard Grade exterior stone surfacing applications require 3-5 hrs @ 20ºC to set and cure correctly, but keep in mind that different grades of resin-bound paving materials may require more time to cure.

Application Conditions

  • Ground temperature 5- 45ºC
  • No rain, showers or ambient humidity above 90%
  • Do not go beyond Dew Point (refer to dew point calculator)
  • Avoid damp or wet surface
