Why Permeable Paving Is Better Than Non-Permeable Paving

You see non-permeable paving materials everywhere in the form of concrete and sand mixtures used in patios, walkways, landscaping, and other areas where hardscape is necessary. However, there is a better way to meet these hardscape needs. Here’s why permeable paving is better than non-permeable paving.

A Gravel Base

A major difference between non-permeable and permeable pathways is one that many people may not even see. Permeable paving uses a deep, purely gravel base instead of the typically thinner mixture of concrete sand and gravel that is more difficult for liquids to move through. By limiting the base to only gravel, liquids like water are able to move deep into the pack and soak back into the soil. However, like permeable paving bases, the gravel-only base is just as stable when enduring harsher weather conditions.

Wider Joints

Another reason why permeable paving is better than non-permeable paving relates to how their joints are designed. Non-permeable paving materials have stiff joints that are filled with sand or similar materials. Permeable paving has wider joints that allow water to drain through the cracks so that it doesn’t pool on top of the hardscape. These joints aren’t so large as to make the surface rough or unstable but instead create a unique and pleasing design. Furthermore, without water pooling onto the surface, erosion is less of a concern. You can rest assured that your pavement will remain in good condition for longer with less maintenance.

Redirecting Water

We keep mentioning permeable paving’s ability to drain water back into the soil, and for good reason! In environments that have been heavily paved over with non-permeable materials, it can be difficult to keep greenery and natural elements alive and thriving. Permeable paving will ensure water is able to reach the soil and keep it healthy and nutritious for plants that line sidewalks. Permeable paving also acts as an effective protective measure to ensure the roots of trees and other plants aren’t trampled or uprooted as people go through their daily lives.

Non-permeable paving is a purely beneficial upgrade to any application. Rockpave can supply you with all the materials your municipality needs to truly thrive. Get in contact with us today!
