Tips for Managing City Stormwater With Permeable Paving

Jim Robinson • August 12, 2022

For cities like Miami, New Orleans, or even Chicago, a consistent issue they have is managing the stormwater that causes floods from excessive rain. One of the best ways to manage this excessive water, however, is by turning to permeable paving suppliers. To help cities make the best of these porous materials, here are some tips for managing city stormwater with permeable paving.

Preventing Floods

One of the greatest challenges of managing floods is finding methods of dispersing the water sitting around on the surface—typically solved with drains that streets are designed to tunnel water towards. Permeable paving is a more efficient solution, however, because it allows the water to disperse into the soil during heavy rainfall and better prevent floods when the water can disperse anywhere on the surface, rather than needing to be moved towards drains. For instance, interlocked concrete pavers with permeable gravel in between makes for an aesthetically pleasing surface that is effective.

Reducing Erosion

Another benefit to be aware of is that permeable paving can be used to reduce erosion from water running off paved surfaces. This not only ensures your city's infrastructure remains in good condition for longer but it also helps keep the soil in your city rich with nutrients.

Wastewater Systems

One of the best tips for managing city stormwater with permeable paving is to use it to protect your wastewater systems from becoming overtaxed. By lessening the burden placed on the wastewater system to handle stormwater, you’ll prevent clogs, overflows, and potable water contamination. If there are places in your city that overly depend on draining rainwater into the sewers, it’s a good idea to supplement sewer drains with permeable surfaces that redirect the water back into the soil.

Environmental Protection

Speaking of contamination, permeable paving can be leveraged to prevent environmental damage. When flooding occurs, chemicals and contaminants on streets to the environment can harm both humans and plant life. Permeable paving allows the water to disperse while it’s still clean and keeps the municipal wastewater systems clear of harmful contaminants. Furthermore, permeable paving is created from recycled materials like gravel, limestone, and sod to create an effective and solid surface.
